The Virginia FFA State Association hosted the 99th Virginia FFA State Convention June 9th -12th, held on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. 

The chapter received the Public Relations Award at the Gold Level based on the Chapter’s activities that they completed throughout the year. 

Alex Morris, Abigail Palmore, Piper Scialdo, and Anna Snoddy competed in the Floriculture Contest. They had to complete a written exam and identify plants, tools, and disorders in the floriculture industry. They placed 19th overall. 

Ryland Carter, Luke Gilliam, Trent Ragland, and Tuck Wooten competed in the Agricultural Mechanics Contest. The team placed 30th overall. Their contest consisted of identifying tools, a written exam, a welding practicum, an electrical practicum, and a math practicum. 

Datota Bryant, Alexis Meadows, Skylar Sauilsbury, and Jackson Smith competed in the Food Science Contest. On Day 1 of the competition, they took a written exam on food safety, nutrition labels, and product design. Skylar placed 2nd and Dakota placed 7th individually on the exam. The team was able to advance to the second day of competition based on the team placing 6th. The Day 2 part of the competition was an aroma test, a math practicum, a triangle test, and a presentation on product development. The team placed 6th overall.  

Dakota Bryant, Sarah Bryant, Ben Gilliam, and Alexis Meadows competed in the Nursery/Landscape Contest. Their contest consisted of identifying plants, insects, and tools, a written exam, and a landscaping design estimate. They placed 8th as a team. 

The Farm Business Management Team consisted of Genesis Brock, Sarah Bryant, Gilliam, and Piper Scialdo. This contest consisted of an exam and a practicum that included real agribusiness scenarios with members completing a balance sheet, cash flow, and income statements. The team placed 5th overall 

Breanna Tucker competed in the Employment Skills Contest. This contest is set up to prepare students for a job interview. She prepared a cover letter, job application, and resume prior to the convention. During the convention, she interviewed with a panel of judges and prepared a follow-up letter. She placed 20th overall. 

Joi Glover competed in the Junior Division of the Agricultural Education Contest. Joi created a lesson plan based on a Water Quality Unit. Not only was she to create the lesson plan, she also had to give a 15-20 minute “lesson”. During that time, her “students” completed a lab that tested nitrates, nitrites, and pH of the water while identifying the insects in the water. Joi placed 5th overall.
