FFA Students at the State Convention

The Virginia FFA State Association hosted the 100th Virginia FFA State Convention, June 8th -11th, held on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. 

The Chapter received the Public Relations Award at the Gold Level for its activities throughout the year. They were also recognized as a Superior Chapter with a Silver rating based on the Chapter’s activities throughout the year. 

Joanna Carter, Issac Carter, Luke Llewellyn, and Collin Snoddy competed in the Junior Division of the Agricultural Mechanics Contest. The team placed 9th overall. Colin Snoddy placed 9th as an individual. Their contest consisted of identifying tools, a written exam, a welding practicum, an electrical practicum, and a math practicum. 

Sarah Bryant, Abigail Palmore, Piper Scialdo, and Anna Snoddy competed in the Floriculture Contest. They had to complete a written exam and identify plants, tools, and disorders in the floriculture industry. They placed 20th overall. 

The Environmental and Natural Resources Team consisted of Bryan Haldane, Thomas Orman, Jr., Kaylee Staton, and Violet VanTichelt. The team completed a written exam, a soil test practicum, a water quality practicum, and identified wildlife specimens on Day 1 of the Contest. On Day 2 they presented a solution to a scenario about Ground Water Runoff in the Shenandoah Valley. The team placed 4th overall in the contest, competing for the first time.  

Datota Bryant, Leigha Pleasants, Skylar Sauilsbury, and Jackson Smith competed in the Food Science Contest. The competition consisted of a written exam on food safety, nutrition labels, and product design. Leigha Pleasants placed 8th individually on the exam, with the team placing 7th overall.  

Members of the Nursery/Landscape Team were Dakota Bryant, Sarah Bryant, Ben Gilliam, and Jackson Harris. Their contest consisted of: identifying plants, insects, and tools, a written exam, and a landscaping design estimate. The team placed 5th overall, and Jackson Harris placed 9th individually. 

The Turf Grass Management Team consisted of Ryland Carter, Luke Gilliam, Jackson Harris, and Jackson Smith. This contest consisted of an exam on the turfgrass industry and plant identification, a math practicum, and a plant disorder identification component. The team placed 10th overall.

Cadence Perkins competed in the Employment Skills Contest. This contest is set up to prepare students for a job interview. She prepared a cover letter, a job application, and a resume prior to the convention. During the convention, she interviewed with a panel of judges and prepared a follow-up letter. She placed 10th overall. 

Joanna Carter competed in the Junior Division of the Agricultural Education Contest. Joanna created a lesson plan based on an Agribusiness Unit. She created a lesson plan and taught a 15-20 minute “lesson”. Jonna placed 2nd overall.
