📡✨ From BCPS Student to Science Speaker! ✨📡

On Friday, March 6, 2026, Buckingham County was proud to welcome back William Payne, BCPS Class of 2023, as a guest speaker for our 8th-grade science classes and a select group of 6th graders.

Mr. Payne delivered an engaging Introduction to Radio presentation that took students on a journey through the science of radio waves — from everyday uses like X-rays and microwaves to the fascinating world of shortwave radio transmission and reception.

After explaining how radio waves power communication across the globe, he brought science to life with a live demonstration using his portable radio station. In a short amount of time — with minimal equipment — Mr. Payne successfully made contact with operators in seven different states:

📍 New York
📍 Connecticut
📍 Illinois
📍 Georgia
📍 Florida
📍 Alabama
📍 Ohio

Students were amazed to see real-time communication happening right before their eyes! What started as a science lesson quickly turned into inspiration. The excitement from the demonstrations has already sparked interest in launching a radio or technology club here at the school.

We love seeing our alumni return to give back, inspire curiosity, and show our students what’s possible. Thank you, Mr. Payne, for helping us turn science into an unforgettable experience!

🔴⚒️ SkillsUSA State Competition Update! ⚒️🔴

Yesterday, our incredible SkillsUSA students competed at the State Leadership & Skills Conference, and we could not be prouder of how they represented our school, program, and community. Their professionalism, preparation, and determination were on full display — now we eagerly await the awards being announced today!

Please help us wish the best of luck to our competitors:

🔹 Haley Dale – Job Demonstration Open (Carpentry)
🔹 Omaura Dibble – Natural Hair Braiding
🔹 Christian Mendez – Job Interview
🔹 Jack Steffensen – Job Demonstration A (Welding)

From presenting technical skills to demonstrating career readiness, these students showcased the very best of career and technical education.

After a full day of competition, the team decided they had earned a “little” pizza to celebrate their hard work 🍕 — and let’s just say it may have been bigger than expected!

We were also honored to have former SkillsUSA Virginia Director and SkillsUSA National Director Tim Lawrence pictured with our students in the final photo. What an incredible opportunity for our competitors!

No matter the results, we are already proud of the dedication, skill, and professionalism these students have demonstrated. Stay tuned for the awards results!
