Buckingham County Public Schools is sharing this message from Dr. Maria Almond, Health Director/ Piedmont Health District (VDH) received on May 10, 2026.
Regional Press Release from late 5/8: Virginia Health Officials Investigating a Measles Case in the Central Region - Newsroom
Several TV channels have been reporting on this news.
We are now seeing over the past few days increased outreach by those affected with measles to healthcare providers due to severity of symptoms.
Measles is highly contagious. The first days 4-5 days prior to rash onset with flu/cold-like symptoms are when many spread illness. It is important to isolate immediately with any flu-like symptoms if unvaccinated and/or had a known exposure and to notify public health.
Vaccination remains the best protection against measles. Two doses of the vaccine provide 97% protection against measles while one dose provides 93% protection.
Ideally the public health department should be notified after an exposure to measles. Receiving vaccine, if not already immune, within 72hrs of exposure significantly helps prevent likelihood of infection. Notably, pregnant women and infants <6months cannot receive the vaccine. but there are options for receipt of immunoglobulin within 6 days of exposure (for pregnant women this is an IV infusion).
Thank you for your work in reaching out to any students who may have previously opted to delay or not receive vaccines to discuss current increased risk. Already some families have called into health departments to get up-to-date. Please also check in with employees to encourage checking vaccine records (thankfully MMR vaccination is widespread amongst most adults). Parents may check child records by calling pediatrician or Request Immunization Record - Immunization.
Please note that due to assumed circulation of the measles virus with reported multiple cases, VDH is now recommending for those living in or travelling to the Buckingham area an early dose for infants between 6mon-12mon infants in addition normal schedule, and also consideration of an accelerated schedule for children or those never vaccinated to receive a 2nd dose 28 days after first dose (routine is at 12-15mon and then 4-5yr).
Infants ages 6 to 11 months are advised to get an early dose of the MMR vaccine. Infants who receive an early dose of MMR vaccine before their first birthday should receive two more doses at the recommended ages and at least 28 days apart.
Children aged 12 months or older and adults who have not yet been vaccinated or never had measles infection are advised to get an MMR vaccine dose with a second dose at least 28 days after the first dose.
Children aged 12 months or older who have previously received only one MMR dose are advised to get a second MMR vaccine dose at least 28 days after the first dose.
Adults who have previously received only one MMR dose should consider a second MMR vaccine dose at least 28 days after the first dose.
Buckingham County residents can call 434-969-4244 to schedule a vaccination appointment.

Please join us in welcoming Sharon Pettus to Buckingham County Public Schools!
Mrs. Denise Bryant, the current Primary School principal, will remain in her role through June 30, 2026. She will assist Mrs. Pettus during her transition. Mrs. Bryant will transfer to Coordinator of Instructional Support effective July 1, 2026.
Message from Mrs. Pettus: I am incredibly honored and excited to serve as the new Principal of Buckingham Primary School. With a background in elementary education and school leadership, I am deeply committed to fostering a positive, student-centered learning environment where every child can grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Throughout my career, I have focused on supporting high-quality instruction, building strong relationships with students, staff, and families, and ensuring meaningful outcomes for all learners. As an educator, this work has always been more than a career—it is truly a calling. I believe that strong relationships, high expectations, and a shared commitment to student success are the foundation of a thriving school community. I am especially excited to join a dedicated staff and partner with our students, families, and the broader community to build on the great work already happening at Buckingham Primary. On a personal note, I am a proud wife and the mother of three grown boys—roles that have shaped my perspective, strengthened my commitment to children, and deepened my understanding of the importance of education and community. I look forward to this new chapter and to working together to ensure every child at Buckingham Primary feels valued, supported, and inspired to succeed.
